OUTRAGE AS FIREBRAND CHOUDARY SAYS WOOTTON BASSETT MARCH WILL GO AHEAD
HATE preacher Anjem Choudary called British soldiers Nazis as he defied a storm of protest and vowed to march in Wootton Bassett.
The Prime Minister led attacks on the “completely inappropriate” rally as a Facebook campaign against it gained huge support.[>
[>
Civic leaders and grieving families of dead soldiers begged Choudary to ditch plans to carry empty coffins through the town that remembers our fallen heroes.[>
[>
More than 277,000 joined the Facebook protest group at the rate of more than one a second by last night.[>
[>
Thousands called the Daily Star’s phone vote with 97% demanding the march in the Wiltshire town be banned.[>
[>
Choudary laid into repatriation processions held to honour dead Brit soldiers after their coffins are flown back to nearby RAF Lyneham.[>
[>
Among the many honoured was Lance Corporal Adam Drane, 23, the 100th serviceman to be killed in 2009.
[>
[>
Even moderate British Muslims called for firebrand Choudary to be put under house arrest to stop the march by his extremist group Islam4UK going ahead.[>
[>
Fears are also growing that it could turn into a bloodbath as far-right groups plan counter protests.[>
[>
Choudary, 42, also stirred up more controversy as he said Muslims would love to have Osama bin Laden as PM.[>
[>
But his remarks comparing our hero troops in Afghanistan to Nazi stormtroopers and the terrorists who carried out the 9/11 and 7/7 atrocities were the most shocking.[>
[>
Vile Choudary said the march would be “provocative”, but ranted: “The same could be said about the Germans fighting for Nazism in the Second World War.[>
[>
“Those involved in 7/7 and 9/11 considered themselves soldiers. How would the British people feel if there was a parade for those who carried out 9/11 or 7/7?”[>
[>
He said his march would remember “Muslims murdered in the name of democracy and freedom” in Afghanistan.[>
[>
He also paid tribute to al-Qaida leader Bin Laden, telling Sky News: “If there was an election in any Muslim country between Sheikh Osama bin Laden and the current leader he’s much more popular.”[>
[>
A spokesman for Gordon Brown said last night: “Anything that is considered to be offensive to, or of concern to, families of troops wounded or killed in Afghanistan would be completely inappropriate.”[>
[>
Tory leader David Cameron condemned the march as “completely unacceptable”.[>
[>
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling called for the Choudary’s supporters to be prosecuted and said: “This is a group that’s intent on whipping up hatred.”[>
[>
North Wiltshire Tory MP James Gray said the thousands who regularly line the streets to pay their respects to the dead had no political motive and were not “blood-thirstily in favour of the war”.[>
[>
Grieving families of dead troops also attacked the protest. Peter Fullarton, whose son James, 24, was killed by a Taliban bomb said the Government must stop the procession going ahead to avoid a riot that could lead to more deaths.[>
[>
Wootton Bassett’s Mayor Steven Bucknell said: “We are will do our utmost to make sure that this march doesn’t go ahead.”[>
[>
Wiltshire Police said they were aware of the “significant community concern” caused by the march and approval would be needed before it went ahead.[>
[>
Muslim group Minhaj-ul-Quran International UK called for the government to ban the protest and hit out at Choudary.[>
[>
Spokesman Shahid Mursaleen said: “If he keeps creating trouble for the country he should be put under house arrest or his organisation should be banned.”[>
