GERMAN FOOTBALL BOSS GETS SHIRTY OVER DAILY STAR PRANK

ABOVE: Michael Ballack in the new strip
30th January 2010

By Victoria Richards

GERMANS are so unimpressed by our jokes about their Nazi-style shirts that even team boss Oliver Bierhoff has been dragged into the row.

Your Daily Star printed the tongue-in-cheek picture of midfielder Michael Ballack, 33, modelling the new kit alongside a picture of Adolf Hitler on Thursday.

It was designed to provoke German and English banter ahead of the World Cup. But furious writers at German newspaper Bild, claimed our story had left 41-year-old Bierhoff “speechless”.

They quoted him as saying: “We are used to such things from the Englanders. “Comparisons like this don’t interest us any more. To comment on such things is in principle unnecessary.”

But Bild were furious after our reporter refused to apologise.

They even added fuel to the fire by speaking to Adidas, the firm which produces the kit in question. Their spokesman Oliver Bruggen reportedly said: “This kind of article was not even worthy of comment.”

And scores of other magazines and newspapers refused to see the funny side. Stern Magazine in Hamburg said: “As soon as a large tournament is knocking at the door, the Tommies swing the Nazi club. The English immerse themselves joyfully in Nazi and world war fantasies. Why they do that is clear. Against the German national soccer team the Englishmen almost always come off worst in most tournaments.”

Munich newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung and Focus magazine both branded us “tasteless”.

Re: German football boss gets shirty over Daily Star prank

Hi, DUDE1985 - your jokes are funny!!

You are right, if us British are going to poke fun at German history then we should poke fun at ours as well and not be offended about it!.
The problem with my country is unfortunately it is full of ignorant self important idiots that laugh at others but not at themselves, they somehow think they are better than the rest of the world like America does. This country has been responsible for many atrocities in the past but they dont want to joke about that....oh no!
I wonder if we should makes jokes about Slavery, I wonder if we should jokes about the Faulklands, Iraq or Afghanistan, what about the crap we caused to the people in our own Island such as the Irish, the Welsh and the Scottish - Is it any wonder why we are so unpopular!!, yet we still somehow think we rule the world from our piddly little island ruled by some old bint in a palance!!
I must say every time I head the National Antham - I turn over or put it on mute because it makes me cringe so much - God save the Queen!! hahahaha. I am NOT a subject!!.

Re: German football boss gets shirty over Daily Star prank

as a german from the second after war generation it dont mind for me if any one makes an nazi joke. what minds for me if any one still hold up the flag all germans are lether wearing, beer drinking jude killers. And this is what this newspaper is doing by comparising our actual football team with an military group, which was responsible of millions of horribel kills.

But hey if you guys like those jokes make some about the UK team

What´s about this one:

If you shoot goals pointable as you throw bombs on dresden I´ll be sure one of a million will hit something else then kids or women.

Or what´s happen if the german team runs trough your defense? Will you call the usa to support you with food and weapons?

Hey i actual don´t know if india or china will be with the world championchip, but if, will you shot or foul them till they run your way?

Do you send a ship like Mayflower to southafrica to get some new "employees" for your manufactorys and cotton fields

Ok i´ll stop, it is too tastless to go on. Oh wait, with your sense of humor you´ll get it.

Funny as it is that jokes about bad history of a nation works not just for the germans or?

Re: German football boss gets shirty over Daily Star prank

Let's face it, the Germans always say they "don't care about Nazi jokes", but that doesn't keep them from commenting gratuitously on them. That's the reason people still make these somewhat stale and dated jokes - because it gets them a reaction, like someone trolling on an internet message board.

While personally I don't think nazi jokes are that funny, the reactions by the Germans never fail to amuse.

If you like to read more amusing, offended comments by Germans being made fun of, I can recommend this brilliant blog that picks up some *new* stereotypes about Germans. The reactions are just as funny:
