GOOD-humoured Germans have finally seen the funny side of the Daily Star’s dig at their Nazi-style football shirts.

On Wednesday we kicked up a Reich stink by revealing their black World Cup strip conjured up memories of Hitler’s evil SS.

Needless to say it went down like a German bomber back in the Fatherland, with newspapers getting all worked up at our black humour. One downmarket paper even branded it “the largest case of bad taste in the history of the competition”.

But when we visited the Bavarian Beer House in London yesterday, our German cousins just laughed. Peter Czakovich, 25, said: “When I read this I nearly wet my lederhosen. I think we Germans need to lighten up. We feel the need to be serious all the time. It’s not right.”

Peter, who moved to London from his homeland four years ago, said he even plans to commit the ultimate act of treason this summer. “I will be supporting England, not Germany,” he said. “I’m sick of the attitude back home. I love the football here. Cheer up Germany.”

Darius Nikolas, 21, who has been in England for two-and-a-half years said: “I think this has been done to put us off the World Cup but it won’t. I think it’s very funny. England and Germany have a very special relationship. We can joke with each other – although the joke will be on you in the Cup!”

Tania Debukh, 26, who lives in Berlin, said: “It’s a bit of fun. I think we should be able to look back and laugh at our history.” But a few more po-faced Germans did not agree.

Hannes Luy, a 27-year-old student, said: “You can’t joke about this subject. England is obsessed with Germany, maybe it is because we beat you at everything.”

We also received emails from hundreds of Germans who got the gag. Tobias Laupichler wrote: “Please keep your funny type of writing because I still looking forward to your next article.”

The new Adidas kit will be worn in friendlies and then against Ghana in the World Cup finals.

Re: German football fans praise Brit sense of humour

what is that ... a comical atonement for the original article ?
Eeverybody knows that Germans can`t laugh about themselves and don`t like if somebody makes fun of them. I know them for years and know their good sides. Humour is none of them.

So just take it as it is

Re: German football fans praise Brit sense of humour

While it is true that German have no (or a very complicated) sense of humor, I am glad the Daily Star has the guts to also print a positive thing about ze Germans like this one. Germans and the English are not so far apart in many terms other than humor, and with more English visiting Germany, people are starting to find out they get along pretty well.
Having said that, there is still a lot of potential to joke about typical German behavior. While I'd also like to see the Nazi references go away, because they are not really hitting the mark anymore nowadays and feel a bit overdone, it is perfectly fun and okay to update your German stereotypes to 2010, because there is a lot to make fun of...for instance, try this great blog written by an English speaking expat in Germany with a good sense of humor:

http://www.ichwerdeeinberliner.com/

He does some really cruel stereotyping and jokes but German love this blog, it has been features in newspapers and on TV already.
