STARS DIG DEEP FOR SPORT RELIEF

COMIC James Corden made a splash last night as he joined a galaxy of stars in digging deep for Sports Relief.

The Gavin And Stacey actor stole the show as his character Smithy went on a one-man mission to whip our national sporting heroes into shape.

There was also a triumphant return for Cheryl Cole, 26, who made her first UK TV appearance since her split from cheating Chelsea star Ashley Cole, 29.

She was determined to prove her critics wrong and put in a show-stopping performance of latest single Parachute.

Corden, 31, challenged diving prodigy Tom Daley, 15, and bombed into the pool below.

Other hilarious scenes saw him take on tennis ace Andy Murray, 22, and Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button, 29.

Corden even got to grips with crocked England football legend David Beckham, 34, as they shared a bath. Ashes hero Andy Flintoff, 32, did not escape Cordon’s wicked humour either.

The pair were filmed taking a pedalo ride just like the drunken one that landed the cricketer in hot water following England’s World Cup defeat to New Zealand in 2007.

The nation’s top sports stars and a host of other famous faces came together in a bid to beat last year’s total of £20million.

The fund pot already stood at well over £2million thanks to the efforts of David Walliams, 38, and celebrity pals who cycled the length of Britain, and Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills, 35, who has undergone a series of gruelling challenges this week to raise cash.

Match Of The Day host Gary Lineker, 49, The One Show’s Christine Bleakley, 31, and Big Brother host Davina McCall, 42, presented an action-packed evening of comedy sketches, live performances and special guests.

They were joined by Richard Hammond, 40, Fearne Cotton, 27, Patrick Kielty, 39, and Claudia Winkleman, 38.

Hunky boyband JLS joined forces with Lemar, 31, and Eurythmics star Annie Lennox, 55, also took to the stage.

There was also an Ashes To Ashes spin-off which saw DCI Gene Hunt, played by Philip Glenister, 47, and his team try to retrieve the Ryder Cup, meeting a range of 80s stars.

His pal DS Ray Carling (Dean Andrews, 46) is shocked when he comes face to face with boxing legend Frank Bruno, 48.
