GAUL HAIL SARKOZY

23rd June 2009

IN TERMS of phrases you never thought we’d say, it’s right up there.

But all hail the common-sense leader of France!

Nicolas Sarkozy sent shockwaves around Europe yesterday when he called for burkas to be banned.

He claimed there was no place in Western society for the all-covering garments that strip Islamic women of their identities.

He said: “The burka is not a religious sign; it’s a sign of subservience, a sign of debasement.

“I say solemnly that it will not be welcome on the territory of the French Republic.”

If only our elected leaders had the courage to say the same.

Sarkozy is right, though: The burka is a symbol of division.

In a time when groups are trying to drive wedges between British communities, the burka highlights the differences and makes their job easier.

There’s always cries of “racism” whenever the idea of banning burkas is raised, as Sarkozy is now finding.

But if we are to address the issue of how Britain develops as a multicultural nation, then the questions need to be asked.

And we need to have an open debate in the UK.

We applaud Sarkozy for having the guts to start the ball rolling.
